Resilience support grants

In February 2009, Capacitybuilders adapted the focus of existing programmes and, where necessary, reallocated funding to new forms of support.

As part of the adaptation of activity, Capacitybuilders:

  • Supported the building of resilience for sector support services, given the pressures they will face in the funding environment (this included modernisation, collaboration, demonstrating impact, commissioning)
  • Improved support available for frontline organisations relevant to the challenges they face or likely to face in the coming years due to the changing economic climate (this included risk management, commissioning; collaboration, modernisation)
90 resilience support grants made

Almost 90 resilience support grants (approximately £1.2m) were awarded: ranging from local consortia right through to addtional activity by the National Support Services (NSS).

A brief summary of some of the excellent work carried out by partner organisations across England

Launched by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the umbrella body for the voluntary and community sector in England, Recession Resources, is a vital tool for organisations of all sizes.

This resource, funded by Capacitybuilders, looks at what has happened to the sector in previous economic downturns, provides projections for the future and looks at how organisations can recession-proof their own organisation. http://www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/advice-support/recession-resources

Guides and reports

Managing in Tough Times was commissioned by the Bristol and West of England ChangeUp Consortia and funded by Capacitybuilders Resilience Funds in March 2009.

The guide covers key issues that may affect Third Sector organisations during periods of financial insecurity. It offers a framework for identifying and assessing current risks and offers guidance on how an organisation can manage and adjust to change. Should the difficult decision be made to close the organisation, it offers guidance on the steps that are required depending on the legal structure of the organisation. http://www.changeupbristol.org.uk/system/files/Managing+in+Tough+Times-links.pdf

The Greater Merseyside Recession Impact Report highlights the findings, challenges and trends facing the third sector in Greater Merseyside and aims to assist the Consortium to revisit its plans for the future delivery of services. http://www.changeupmerseyside.org.uk/changeupdocs/Greater%20Merseyside%20Recession%20Impact%20report.pdf
