About evaluation and learning

Evaluation and learning help organisations to recognise strengths and weaknesses, enabling effective planning to improve performance.

Learning

Whilst the term ‘learning’ can evoke images of text books and blackboards, organisations are increasingly paying attention to, and seeing the benefit of, organisational learning.

Organisational learning is about creating an environment that fosters and promotes individual and team learning capabilities to enable the effective processing, interpretation of and response to information. Or, put simply, it is about how a group of people, or an organisation, can collectively work better to produce the outcome they really want to produce.

Evaluation

Evaluation is a vital tool in supporting learning and demonstrating the achievement and results of organisations and the programmes that they deliver.

An evaluation involves collecting and using the information and knowledge that organisations capture to make judgements about its performance and effectiveness.

If conducted effectively, findings from an evaluation can be used to provide evidence of impact, identify areas of weakness and success and enable effective planning.

The sharing of learning and findings from evaluations is therefore an important tool in improving the services delivered by individual organisations and the wider sector.
