Capacitybuilders' funding

Capacitybuilders, a learning agency

Capacitybuilders is committed to being a learning agency both internally and in supporting learning in the sector. We are constantly striving to indentify new areas of learning and sharing, to support improved outcomes for individual organisations and the third sector as a whole.

Capacitybuilders learning and research programme

We have recently embarked on a programme of evaluation and research to enable us to understand the impact of our funding, improve our funding processes, influence our programme and policy development and promote wider sharing of learning within the sector. Further details on these projects will be shared in this site as they become available.

Current research

Current projects being undertaken by Capacitybuilders include the independent evaluation of ChangeUp, identifying good practice in community resource centres and researching the impact of the economic downturn on the sector.

1. Evaluation of Changeup

Capacitybuilders has commissioned an evaluation to assess the impact of its investment in third sector capacity building activity across the country and evaluate the effectiveness of ChangeUp. The independent evaluation, which is being led by the Third Sector Research Centre, started in December 2008 and is running until 2011.

Initial findings from the Summative Report, looking at the period 2004-2008, will be available here soon.

2. Good Practice in Community Resource Centres RC

This research project aims to identify the different approaches to running community resource centres. Through a series of case studies and workshops, the research will highlight best practice in running community resource centres including the identification of key challenges and solutions and areas of innovation in service delivery. The research will be used to produce a set of guidance notes on good practice for community resource centres which will be available here soon.

3. Economic Downturn Research

As we enter a period of economic downturn, Capacitybuilders have commissioned a number of research projects to gain an understanding of its impact and whether capacity building has increased the resilience of the sector in facing financial pressure. We expect to share learning and findings from this research soon.

4. Partnership Improvement Programme

Capacitybuilders is supporting the Partnership Improvement Programme, which brings together representatives from local authorities and the third sector to model a new way of developing sustainable relationships across sectors.

Capacitybuilders' funding is being used to support a project which brings organisations together to identify mutually beneficial partnership opportunities and talk openly about how to overcome obstacles they might encounter in putting them into practice.

The programme is being led by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) and delivered by the Institute for Voluntary Action Research. More details on the project can be found on the IDeA website: www.idea.gov.uk.
