About ICT

ICT stands for Information and Communications Technology and is an umbrella term that covers computer hardware and software, the internet, communications devices such as mobile phones and the other computer-based tools and applications we use.

Many people also refer to this as Information Technology, or IT, and the terms are usually taken to mean the same thing.

Computers and the internet have now become a standard part of the day-to-day workings of almost every third sector organisation, so ICT is considered to be a core component of how they function.

Organisations with well planned, well resourced ICT and with a strong understanding of what is offered by technology suppliers and support providers will be able to operate efficiently. With an eye on new technology developments and the use of social networking to engage in on-line conversations, organisations will be enabled to work more effectively with their beneficiaries.

Thinking about how to use ICT is not just a case of having the right boxes and wires. It is about how your organisation manages and uses information, how it communicates, and how robust planning of technology helps it achieve its goals.
