Governance workstream
Led by NCVO
Strengthening the ability of support providers to provide development support in governance and leadership in order to increase the effectiveness of third sector organisations.
Workstream partnership
Lead agency: National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO)
Partners: The Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) and the Community Sector Coalition (CSC).
Key aims for 2008-2011
- to provide development support on leadership and governance in order to increase the effectiveness of frontline organisations
- to promote widespread adoption of good leadership and
governance practices by support providers and frontline
organisations alike ensuring that: the needs of their beneficiaries
are met, their vitality is sustained, their relevance to their
local community is maintained, they are able to recognise the need
for and to manage, subsequent change.
Benefits for support providers
- enhanced leadership and governance knowledge
- will have reviewed their own governance and leadership practices, helping to make them models of best practice
- will be aware of opportunities and approaches to community sector leadership development
- a better understanding of the requirement for governance systems and regulation to be proportionate to the size and needs of an organisation
- an increase in the supply of trustees to boards, and an increased understanding of ways to support better recruitment and induction procedures
- cross-sector learning of innovative, effective, and sustainable
leadership practices across private and public services.
Key opportunities
- overcoming recruitment issues that leave boards under-resourced and unrepresentative of the communities they serve
- overcoming lack of governance and leadership skills of board members, employees and volunteers
- achieving recognition of proportionate and appropriate governance structures especially in smaller community organisations
- meeting the need for meaningful and effective partnership working across the third sector and with both public and private organisations.
