Exploring the role of Social Networking in Volunteering and Volunteer Management

As part of the Modernising Volunteering workstream, Red Foundation have commissioned Volunteer Centre Brighton & Hove to carry out a pilot project to explore the role of social networking. Staff have set up a Facebook page for volunteer managers and volunteers to encourage shared learning and connections between individuals and groups and a twitter page which provides short, regular updates about new volunteering opportunities and real-time updates about volunteering in Brighton and Hove. An online blog has also been set up with topical information and updates.

Dave Adams, Volunteering Network Developer at Impetus identifies the benefits of social networking so far as extending the reach of the Volunteer Centre’s service to new audiences and enabling information to be delivered quickly and to a wide audience. Challenges have included changing people’s misconceptions of social networking and building time for social networking into the working day.
